Ahh.. color mixing! I was feeling really frustrated lately with my tendency to reuse the same color palettes and getting muddy really quickly in landscape paintings so I decided to do an exercise in Richard Schmidt’s Alla Prima book (see p136).
It looks complicated, but all you are really doing is 1) mixing the colors in your palette with white, and then 2) mixing two colors with white. The biggest lesson I learned from this was that colors in your painting can be achieved by two colors + a desaturating color. I thought it was like maybe 3 colors + a desaturating, but that’s probably why I was getting muddy.
